Senior women and their families should know how to spot the signs of a heart attack. The symptoms of a heart attack in women are different than the symptoms of a heart attack in men. And since women tend to outlive their partners, senior women have a higher chance of being alone and aging in place. In-home care services are important for senior women. Having in-home care provides senior women with social connections, household help, and help with things like managing medications.
In-home care can also help senior women if they experience any of these common signs of a heart attack in women:
Neck, Jaw, Shoulder, or Upper Back Pain
In men, the pain from a heart attack often presents as pain in the chest or in the arm. But in women that pain can be in the neck, jaw, shoulder, or upper back instead of in the chest or shooting pain in the arm. Sharp, sudden, or excruciating pain in the neck, jaw, shoulder or upper back that comes on fast and doesn’t go away should be checked out by a doctor right away.
Shortness Of Breath
Shortness of breath is not unusual if someone is exerting themselves, but if your senior parent is suddenly short of breath when they are sitting still or just doing everyday tasks that is a sign that something serious could be happening. If your senior parent can’t catch their breath they may need immediate emergency assistance. In-home care is great for seniors who have a high risk of having a medical emergency because the care provider can summon emergency services if necessary.
Nausea or Vomiting
The sudden onset of nausea or vomiting can also be related to a heart attack. It could have other causes, but if your senior loved one hasn’t had anything spoiled to eat and they aren’t feeling sick but they suddenly feel nauseous or vomiting that could be a sign of a heart attack. Make sure that you tell your senior parent to be sure and let you or the In-home care provider know if they are feeling nauseous.
Sweating
Sweating in senior women can be related to hormones, but it can also be a symptom of a heart attack. If your senior parent starts sweating profusely and they are exhibiting other symptoms of a heart attack don’t wait. Call emergency services right away just in case she is having a heart attack. As a general rule of thumb, if your senior loved one doesn’t look right, they are pale, and they are sweating unexpectedly you should call medical help right away.
Heartburn
Seniors often have heartburn and seniors who are prone to heartburn may experience severe heartburn regularly. But if your senior loved one doesn’t usually get heartburn and they have severe heartburn that could be a symptom of a heart attack. If over-the-counter heartburn medications don’t help then it’s time to call the doctor or emergency services to make sure your senior loved one isn’t having a heart attack.
