It’s very common for seniors to experience a range of sleep disorders. Seniors can have trouble sleeping due to things like medication side effects, loneliness, anxiety, and health issues. Seniors who live alone often have trouble sleeping at night because they don’t like being alone. Seniors who are living at home worry about things like falling at night when no one is around to help them, or having something happen in the middle of the night like a fire or emergency. Live-in home care services are a wonderful way to alleviate your senior parent’s fears and help them sleep better at night.
With live-in home care seniors never have to worry about what will happen to them because there is always someone there. Your senior parent may be able to sleep better and be healthier with live-in home care.
They may even be able to avoid these common sleep disturbances:
Insomnia
Insomnia can be difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. Seniors may experience insomnia due to changes in sleep patterns, medical conditions, medications, or stress. Having live-in home care can help seniors overcome insomnia if that insomnia is caused by stress or anxiety.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. It can lead to fragmented sleep, snoring, and daytime fatigue. Seniors may be at higher risk for sleep apnea due to factors such as weight gain and changes in muscle tone.
Treatment for sleep apnea can help seniors better but requires seniors to wear an oxygen mask throughout the night. Seniors often feel better knowing someone is there to help them if they need help with the mask.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
RLS causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations such as tingling or crawling. Symptoms tend to worsen at night, leading to difficulty falling asleep.
Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD)
PLMD involves involuntary jerking or twitching movements of the legs during sleep, which can disrupt sleep and lead to daytime sleepiness.
Nocturia
Nocturia is the need to wake up multiple times during the night to urinate. It can disrupt sleep and contribute to daytime tiredness. Nocturia may be caused by factors such as an overactive bladder, prostate enlargement in men, or certain medications.
Seniors who have nocturia have a high risk of falling if they get up to go to the bathroom multiple times during the night. But, having a caregiver in the home all night can lower the risk of your senior parent falling.
Medication Side Effects
Many medications commonly prescribed to seniors can affect sleep quality. Side effects such as insomnia, daytime drowsiness, or vivid dreams may contribute to sleep disturbances.
Chronic Pain
Conditions such as arthritis, back pain, or neuropathy can cause discomfort that interferes with sleep. Seniors may have difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position or staying asleep due to pain.
Sleep-Related Movement Disorders
Seniors may experience sleep-related movement disorders such as bruxism (teeth grinding), REM sleep behavior disorder (acting out dreams), or sleepwalking, which can disrupt sleep and pose safety risks.
