Even if your elderly loved one doesn’t like the scary aspects of Halloween, this time of year can still be a fun time to celebrate all of the non-scary elements that come along with fall and Halloween. Many seniors enjoy these quieter ways to celebrate the season and still feel connected with their friends, family, and home care assistance.
Seven Pre-Halloween Ways to Celebrate the Season
These activities can usually take place just about any time in October and, for the most part, don’t require a lot of physical activity but still allow your loved one to show a little Halloween spirit.
1) Decorate with fun, fall home décor. While there are plenty of spooky decorations for sale, there are also often lots of non-spooky decorations like cute pumpkins, fall leaves, and silly scarecrows. Help your loved one get in the spirit by decorating her home or room with fall colors and textures. Home care assistance can help your loved one get out her yearly decorations and place them out for viewing.
2) Go out for a seasonal drink. Sometimes, just a quick visit to the local coffee shop drive-through for a pumpkin-flavored beverage is the perfect way to celebrate the season – maybe even several times. If your loved one cannot drive, talk to her home care assistance provider about taking her for a coffee run this month.
3) Visit a family-friendly pumpkin patch or corn field. Do a bit of research to make sure you get a non-scary pumpkin patch or corn maze to take your elderly loved one to and enjoy the smells and colors of fall.
4) Go for a stroll through some woods. Fall has a special smell and beautiful colors that come along with the Halloween holiday, so talk to your loved one about heading out to stroll along a paved path near some woods. If the leaves are changing colors, this can be a beautiful way to enjoy the season.
5) Visit a garden. Gardens may be closing down for the year, but if your local garden has perennials, this can be a great time to soak up some of those last garden vibes.
6) Bake up some Halloween Treats. This can be creative by making some cute ghost cupcakes, or your loved one can stick with standard fall treats like pumpkin bread. This is another great task that a home care assistance provider can assist with.
7) Watch classic Halloween cartoons or shows that are not spooky, like “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” or “Hocus Pocus.”
Halloween Night
If your loved one is anxious about being home alone on Halloween, have her come to your home to help hand out candy or to hang out with family while others take care of that duty. If she lives alone, encourage her to keep her outside lights off and her interior lights low to discourage trick-or-treaters. While a sign can be helpful outside, it can also often invoke the ire of some mischievous trick-or-treaters who may decide to show your loved one a trick or two. Finally, she can leave a basket of treats outside on the porch with a note for each person to grab one. While it’s unlikely everyone will abide by the rule, once it’s gone, the other trick-or-treaters will probably just walk away.
Halloween may not be for everyone, but fall is so encourage your loved one to enjoy fall as much as possible.
