April is National Garden Month. It’s spring in many parts of the country in April so it’s a great month to celebrate gardens in both the forms that many people visit as well as those that they cultivate at home. You may think that since your elderly loved one is homebound, perhaps in a small apartment or generally unable to get out and perform physical activities, she cannot participate in National Garden Month, but there are plenty of ways she can celebrate the month without having to go outside to a plot of dirt and pull weeds and her live-in home care provider can help her with this activity..
Five Fun Ways to Enjoy Gardening In the Home
If your loved one still wants to use her ‘green thumb” to help something grow and enjoy the fruits of her labor, there are plenty of small gardens that she can develop inside of her home.
Try an Herb Garden. Growing herbs can be a great way to play in the dirt and grow something that can be used to enhance the flavors of her meals in the future. If your loved one has access to a window sill and some nice outdoor light, she can grow many herbs right there in her home.
Build a Terrarium. A terrarium is a clear container that provides a home for soil and plants in an environment different from its surroundings. It is usually a sealable container that can be opened for maintenance or to access the plants inside. Some terrariums can be self-sufficient, relying on the moisture created inside of them to keep the plants healthy.
Make a Zen Garden. A Zen Garden is often not your typical plant-based garden but is a garden comprised of sand, small smooth rocks, and maybe some other ornamental features. The purpose of a Zen garden is to allow the gardener to rake the sand and reduce stress levels with mindfulness.
Have an underwater garden. These low-maintenance gardens can be a fun way to be creative and bring a sense of peacefulness to a room. They can be a mix of plants that naturally live underwater as well as decorative elements like the ones you see in fish tanks.
Create a Succulent Garden. Many succulents are quite small and don’t require a ton of soil, so they are perfect for arranging in a pretty little pot or dish to brighten up a corner of the home.

Mental Health Benefits of Gardening
Gardening provides many mental health benefits such as an improved outlook and a reduction of depression, stress level reduction, and a renewed sense of purpose. They can boost spirits as they grow and flourish and give your loved one something to check on each day to see the progress that develops as she cares for the environment. Seeing that first bloom or harvesting that first item can bring a wonderful sense of achievement.
Live-In Home Care Staff Can Help With Garden Care
