February 26 is Letter to an Elder Day. It’s designed to get people to write warm, caring notes and letters to an elderly person who may not get a lot of mail or regular visits from people. You or her home care aide and your mom can team up and write a letter or two to an elderly pen pal.
How do you find aging adults who want to receive unsolicited mail? Here are some tips.
Ask Area Assisted Living Communities
Older adults in assisted living communities don’t always have family close by to visit often. Many directors of assisted living communities keep a list of residents who don’t get a lot of mail. Ask area communities if there are residents who you could write letters to.
You’ll send the letters to the director to be distributed to protect a resident’s privacy. Whether you get a letter back or not is up to the resident and his or her abilities
Partner With An Organization Like Project Penpal
Project Penpal is a non-profit organization that looks for volunteers to write letters and send notes to older adults who are looking for a pen pal. It’s a free program that costs you no more than the stamps and time.
You fill out an application and are matched with an older adult who is looking for a pen pal. The application is short and sweet and just requires a name, address, and email.
Another organization to consider is International Pen Friends. The program works the same way, but the people your mom writes to are in another country. She can learn more about another person’s life and culture this way.
Find Old Friends
Does your mom have an old friend she lost touch with? If you can find that friend’s address and verify it’s still valid, write a letter and catch up. You may need to find that friend’s son or daughter on social media and reach out that way, but it’s easier to find old friends than you might imagine.
Plus, your mom may find her friend is close by or comes to town every now and then. They might be able to meet for lunch and catch up on old times. You could help make the arrangements.
Home Care Aides Make Sure Your Mom Isn’t Alone and Lonely
Is your mom also alone for most of the week? She shouldn’t have to be. Call our home care agency and ask about companionship visits. With caregivers stopping by to help her with chores and errands, or simply joining her for part of an afternoon, your mom doesn’t have to be lonely.
Talk to our home care agency about your mom. Answer questions about her health and mobility and arrange the services that will most help her.
